Oral Pathology & Oral Lesion Evaluation

Concerned About a Spot, Lump, or Sore in Your Mouth?

Changes in the mouth can happen for many reasons. Some are harmless and temporary, while others may require treatment or closer evaluation. If you notice a sore, lump, white patch, red area, swelling, or any unusual change that does not heal within 2 weeks, it should be examined by an experienced oral surgeon.

Dr. Steven Sudbrink provides evaluation and treatment of oral lesions and diseases affecting the mouth, gums, tongue, lips, jawbones, and surrounding tissues.

Common Oral Conditions We Evaluate

Patients are often referred for evaluation of:

  • White patches (leukoplakia)
  • Red patches (erythroplakia)
  • Mouth ulcers or sores
  • Lumps or bumps inside the mouth
  • Tongue lesions
  • Lip lesions
  • Gum growths
  • Cysts of the jaw
  • Salivary gland problems
  • Bone abnormalities seen on X-rays
  • Areas of irritation from dentures or biting
  • Suspicious areas that may require biopsy

Many oral lesions are benign (non-cancerous), but some may represent precancerous or cancerous changes. Early diagnosis is important.

When Should You Have an Oral Lesion Checked?

You should schedule an evaluation if you have:

  • A sore that does not heal within 2 weeks
  • Persistent pain or burning
  • A lump or thickened area
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Numbness of the lips, tongue, or chin
  • A changing patch that is red, white, or dark in color
  • Swelling in the mouth or jaw
  • Bleeding without an obvious cause

Even painless lesions should be evaluated if they persist.

What Is an Oral Biopsy?

An oral biopsy is a simple procedure used to remove a small sample of tissue for laboratory examination. This helps determine the exact diagnosis and whether any treatment is necessary.

Biopsies are commonly performed with local anesthesia and are typically quick and well tolerated.

Depending on the size and location of the lesion, the entire area may sometimes be removed during the biopsy procedure.
